I heard snapping twigs and shouting behind us as we went down the ravine.
River Road was ahead of us, through the trees, so I turned, tugging Jasmine with me up the far side of the ravine toward the corn field. Better to stay under cover.
But we ran out of woods. There was nothing between us and the barn but a corn field, all stubble and muddy humps, harvested. There was a stand of trees near the barn, but they weren't hiding anything.
