Fantasy Horror Mystery ghost story high school

Few people in the world are as universally distrusted and mocked as high school vice principals. When a teacher walks down the hall, groups of students will stop talking, but when a vice principal walks down the hall groups of teachers shut up. It's a terrible stereotype. Vice principals discipline students who are in trouble and evaluate teachers. How can they be liked? How can a person in that job do good?

Sealed with a Kiss

Published Oct 31, 2019 · 2,242 words (9 minutes) · 1 like · 96 views

Mystery Police procedural

“Sealed with a Kiss,” a little police procedural that was originally written for an anthology sponsored by a Canadian regional magazine. The story was accepted but the anthology never appeared, because the town in which the editor was based, Fort McMurray, was partly destroyed by a forest fire, which disrupted a lot of people’s plans. I’ve sent it here and there, but haven’t been able to place it, so I’ve decided to put it up on Curious Fictions as a free read.

October and Halloween are just around the corner. You can feel it in the evening breeze that's a little cooler, and there's a tone shift in the rustling of leaves as they begin the change from summer green to autumn colors. And, of course, the ghosts are waking, as they do in this story. Their night to walk freely is coming.

Mystery Sid Rafferty Matt Hughes War in the Woods Vancouver Island old growth

In 1997, I had a mystery novel out from Doubleday Canada, Downshift, that was ill-fated. The editor who wanted the book had to win a five-month argument with the marketing department. Then she left to go to another publisher three months before the novel’s release. Not good. Old Growth would have been the sequel.
